Our Children – Delight in Life Naturally

By Amanda Fischer, Director of Lifespan Learning
Children often can help adults to remember what “delight” is like. Children tend to delight in life naturally. The first snowfall, a birthday cake, a race with a friend; children are awake to the delights of being alive in a world full of wonder and beauty. Try out some of the ideas below to practice delight this month together as a family.

  • Read the book of silly poems Garbage Delight together out loud
  • Celebrate with good food and music in honour of the women in our lives who provide nurture at the Mother’s Day Brunch and Concert on Sunday May 11
  • Attend the special children’s service led by our Minister Wayne on Sunday May 18 and see some amazing magic tricks!
  • Get outside and play together. Fly a kite, climb a tree, build a fort, run or crawl.
  • Practice noticing moments of delight together with the “Bowl of Delight” ritual. Each day at a regular time, pass around a bowl and some stones. Have each person place a stone in the bowl and share a moment of delight they felt that day.

Monthly Theme Challenge

Sharing Delight:
Your mission this month: bring delight to someone else’s life. Together as a family, organize a special surprise gift for someone. It might be someone in your life who needs some delight, or it could be a complete stranger who you pass on the street or meet at a restaurant. Ideas for gifts might be a home-made card, a special visit, a letter, or a simple home-made craft.
