Families Growing Together: What if Transformation is Letting Go?

by Margaret Evans, Director of Lifespan Learning
Transformation had never been a concept that I considered at this time of the year. I contemplated transformation at the beginning of a school years and for New Year’s resolutions; these new ideas usually remaining only in my head. In my experience, May had not screamed “Change!”, aside from the warming weather.
May had typically been a month of pushing through. During my university days, it was the dreaded finals month. Papers, exams and final presentations all seemed to accumulate in those doom-filled judgement days. It seemed agonizing to wait until the moment when it was all finished, and I could enjoy the summer months.
Reflecting on this historically traumatic month, I wonder what actions and events in our lives we are simply trying to push through until the end. Is this the way of true transformation? Is it really about the endless push?
What if true transformation of life and spirit is also about learning to let go, and falling into a rhythm that trusts the universe will allow its process to proceed without our input? Could this be the gift of freedom we are so desperate for as we anticipate the build up to what seems to be the final push?
Are there actions and events in your life and the life of your family that you are forcing? What might happen if you let go?
Writing papers and final exams required a fair amount of work. After a certain point, I felt that my mind had reached its capacity. “I know what I know and what will happen will happen”; momentum had taken over.
What patterns or rhythms have you yet to allow yourself to step into?
Where might you allow momentum to take you?
